Restaurant’s Background

Why Eighteen Chefs?

The owner and Executive Chef, Benny Se Teo says that the number ‘18’ is the moniker of the active local gang.

'I want delinquents to know that life offers many alternative paths. You don't have to identify as a gangster, you can be a chef’

Our Social Vision & Mission Statement

We wish to spread Benny’s story of experience, strength and hope to inspire troubled youths and people with conviction backgrounds to find alternative positive ways to reintegrate back into society.

We would like to work with other social agencies to help create this awareness and to provide a platform for these group of people to realize their talents in the Food & Beverage industry.

By providing them with a safe and non-judgmental working environment, we believe that we are giving them a chance to also work on their recovery through this unity of bond which will eventually allow them to be of service to the community

Benny’s Story

Benny has an unpleasant past as a drug addict. What he thought to be a passing phase of trying out drugs in his teenage years turn out to be a fifteen years’ nightmare. It consumed him both mentally and financially and he has been in and out of jail multiple times. Only by sheer willpower and his undying faith to keep doing the next right thing, was he able to break his bondage to have a normal life finally.

Benny’s addiction existed for a long period of time. As such it has influenced his characters.  He was dishonest to the people around him. He was also disrespectful and selfish to others to sustain his addiction. The outcome had an effect to those close to him. This created a lot of distrusts and disappointments in them. They hesitated to help even when he was in dire needs.  This has closed the door of acceptance for him. Society was not so forgiving over these types of destructive behaviours.

Now he feels that he needs to help youth-at-risks as well as ex-delinquents in not going down the same path in life while learning a new skill sets to support their own living. We believe that given a strong supportive environment with no discrimination to a person’s past, these people will have a much better chance in changing to a new leaf.
